Rune Guidance

runesRunic divination or "rune casting" is not "fortune telling" in the sense that one actually sees the future. Instead, runes allow a means of analysing the path that one is on and more so present with a likely outcome. The future is not fixed as we know, it is always transient and ever changing as are the elements; Earth, Wind, Fire and Water. It changes with everything one does, this is the way of nature as we are very much aware of are we not.

Since ancient times, runes have been used for divination and magic, in addition to writing and hence a valuable tool of communication. The word "Rune" actually means "mystery", “secret” or “whisper”. In addition each rune has esoteric meanings and properties associated with it beyond its mundane meaning and phonetic value. Each translates into a word or a phrase signifying concepts important to the early peoples who used them, representing the forces of nature and mind. Each rune has a story attached to it and a relationship to a Norse God, the story it tells you should always be acknowledged and more importantly allowed to influence your own journey.

runes9readingOdin, the Norse High God of the Aesir, hung from the world tree, Yggdrasil, impaled on his own spear for nine days and nights in order to gain the knowledge of runes. When the runes appeared below him, he reached down and took the runic knowledge which gave him power. He later passed on this knowledge to the  Vanir goddess Freya. She in turn, taught him the magic of Seidr. Heimdall, the god who guarded the Rainbow Bridge taught the runes to all mankind with a major lesson that one can always change paths.

The Runes are steeped in nature itself with elements influencing their true meaning that being Wind, Sun, Ice and or Rain for example. An intellectual approach is difficult to attach to their meaning and thus a deeper level of awareness unfolds for those with knowledge and eagerness to learn. Many ancient cultures were and still are dominated by elemental forces and the Gods were considered to be one of the same thing. Furthermore, it represents the natural world which is seemingly responsible for its creation. An example of this is certainly with the Germanic peoples who believed the God Thor was responsible for thunder.
Understandably the Runes are a difficult concept for our modern mind and western culture to grasp due to the logical mind that is trained differently. It is essential though that for one to gain an understanding of their influence and significance, we need to expand our knowledge on their intricate use and purpose whilst on our journey in this lifetime. For people to gain an insight into patterns of their life and how this was unfolding they used the Runes for information and a guidance system intrinsic to creating a path created by themselves. This allowed them to take the necessary steps to ensure survival under the forces of nature which intrinsically caused death and disaster for many who were unprepared. In large it is pivotal to remember also that the Runes wisdom has been passed down orally for many traditions and cultures. This has been designed in many forms, one of those being Poetry, however what is crucial to remember is that this was not for everyone’s eyes and never committed to in writing, hence its sacredness.

If nature is our guide as suggested then we need to be aware of the shapes it forges for us and open our eyes and ears to the concept of this magnificent language we are blessed with. As a gardener needs tools to design a beautiful garden, a person needs their own tools to form a map that enables a journey to unfold.

“She wore a cloak set with stones along the hem. Around her neck and covering her head she wore a hood lined with cat-skins. In one hand she carried a staff with a knob on the end and from her belt, holding together her long dress, hung a charm pouch.”
